The Rivers Foundation presents the Gingerland Secondary School with a one year subscription of Linguascope, which is considered one of the World’s Best Language Learning Platforms for Schools learning world languages. All students at GSS who are studying French and/or Spanish and Teachers of Foreign Language can access thousands of educational activities designed to improve speaking, reading, and comprehension of global languages.

Mission: The Rivers Foundation, is a U.S. based Non Profit established in 2019 to promote and support students’ study of global languages in general and French, Spanish and Chinese in particular to develop language proficiency for further education, develop the global workforce, and to use language as a tool to help foster greater understanding of our world.  More + information at https://riversfoundationus.org/.

Impetus: Its founder, Lauren Rivers, a Nevisian, has a passion for foreign languages.  She studied and taught French and Spanish for a short time at GSS.  She is motivated to give back to her community; and believes that learning a world language is no longer a luxury, but a necessary skill that students must have

to compete in a global economy.   Ms. Rivers points to global trends in foreign language demand and proficiency and agrees with the US Council on Foreign Relations assertion that the promotion of foreign language instruction should be a national priority.  She also concurs with their assertion that “the global economy is shifting away from the English-speaking world”. The Council predicts that the Chinese economy will surpass the US economy in size soon after 2030. Latin America (Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking) is growing strongly as well.
